How to Make Your Candles Last Longer: 10 Simple Tips
A beautifully handcrafted candle deserves to be enjoyed for as long as possible. With just a few simple habits, you can extend your candle's life, improve its scent throw, and enjoy a cleaner, safer burn.
1. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn
Always trim the wick to around 5 mm before lighting your candle. This helps reduce soot, prevents excessive flames and creates a cleaner burn.
2. Let the Wax Melt Evenly
During the first burn, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the jar. This usually takes around 2–3 hours and helps prevent tunnelling.
3. Avoid Burning for Too Long
Although it may be tempting, avoid burning your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. This keeps the wax and fragrance performing at their best.
4. Keep Away from Draughts
Burn your candle in a calm area away from open windows, fans and strong airflow to ensure an even flame.
5. Store Correctly
Keep candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve their colour and fragrance.
6. Use a Candle Snuffer
Instead of blowing out the flame, use a candle snuffer to reduce smoke and protect the wick.
7. Keep the Wax Clean
Dust, matches or wick trimmings can affect the burn quality. Always keep the wax surface clean.
8. Burn on a Stable Surface
Always place candles on a heat-resistant, level surface away from curtains or flammable materials.
9. Stop Before the Bottom
Leave around 1 cm of wax at the bottom of the container to avoid overheating the glass.
10. Enjoy the Ritual
Candles aren't just about fragrance—they're about slowing down, creating warmth and making everyday moments feel special.
